Backlog of unclaimed ID cards may require GECOM’s direct intervention – Dr. Luncheon

Georgetown : The number of uncollected Identification (ID) cards and the other issues relating to the claims and objections exercise are sources of concern that may require direct intervention from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon said Cabinet at its last statutory meeting lamented that ID cards are yet to be claimed and the registration of voters is incomplete.
.
“GECOM either independently or some representation by affected people… or those identifying with the disadvantaged possible voters could come up with some scheme or mechanism to address the situation,” Dr. Luncheon said.
The scale of uncollected ID cards last recalled was 30,000 but the indifference on the part of some registrants was blamed. Nevertheless Dr. Luncheon believes that redressing the situation may require more human resources focusing specifically on the backlog.

Elections are constitutionally due later this year and GECOM’s Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally, said that the commission is ready for the “keenly-anticipated national and regional elections” predicting an election date in August.
