Bacteria at QEH

Bridgetown.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has been call in by health officiasl to deal with a strain of the Klebsiella Pneumoniae that has been discovered in several wards at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

In a statement released to the media last night, the QEH said that in the last 18 months it had been dealing with an increase infections caued by Klebsiella Pneumoniae that had resisted several  drugs.

"In an effort to strengthen the hospital's quality control programme, an infection control team from the Pan American Health Organisation has been invited to review the operations of the QEH to increase the safety and level of patient care", the satement said.

The PAHO team is expected to improve on disease surveillance systems, inclusive of a laboratory information system to enhance monitoring and treatment  of the bacteria causing the problem.
