Bajans taking more from the society says Prime Minister

Bridgetown.

Prime Minister of Barbados Freundel Stuart has expressed concerns over a disturbing trend which he thinks could lead to the decay of the Barbadian society.

Speaking at opening  ceremony of the inagural  national consultation on the society in Barbados  which began  yesterday  at  the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre,  Stuart  said he is worried that more Barbadians now want to take more from the island rather than contribute to its development.

"The number of takers is getting larger and I am concerned about that, you cannot lower your standards to get the plaudits of the crowd. We have to challenge Barbadians to rise to higher standards',Stuart said.

"Mediocrity should not be an option, the means by which we live should never outdistance the ends for which we live", Stuart warned.

Approximately 200 persons drawn from government departments, civil society and the church are participating in the consultations, which has as its theme "The Changing Barbadian Society:Shaping a Brighter Tomorrow'
