Thousands of Barbadians are expected to make their way to the polling stations across the island to vote for the candidates and the political party they want to lead the country for the next five years.
This is the island's 14 election since adult suffrage in 1951 and the 10th since independence, it is a straight battle between the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) lead by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, a 61 year old lawyer, and the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) lead by Owen Arthur, a 63 year old economist who led Barbados from 1994 to 2008
Eight candidates drawn from a Coalition of United Parties and several six independent candidates are contesting the polls.
Both parties have a full state of candidates in the 30 constituencies. This is the fifth occasion that Arthur will lead the BLP into a general elections and the first time the DLP will be led by Stuart.
There are 247, 211 persons registered to vote. The polling stations will open at 6 a.m and close at 6 p.m.
