Barbados is not an tax haven says Holder

Bridgetown.

Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder, says his government does not share France concerns that Barbados is an off shore "tax haven".

Speaking to journalist at a press conference held at the American Embassy in Bridgetown  yesterday,  Holder said he was pleased with the steps Barbados had taken to strengthen its anti money -laundering  legislation.

"I certainly think that in recent years Barbados has taken steps to strengthen its money laundering and counter terrorist financing legislation. Our embassy here has done work with our Barbadian counterparts in trying to deal with these issues, and I think that overall Barbados has been effective in that regard", Holder said.

He added that there is still room for improvement.. Holder was speaking after meeting with the Attorney General of Barbados Adriel Brathwaite and his counterparts from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.    Last week France's President Nicholas Sarkozy recently listed Barbados among 11 tax havens that should be shunned for failure to conform to acceptable tax practices
