Barbados still seeking fishing agreement with Trinidad and Tobago

Bridgetown:

Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean says Barbados is not to blame for the lack of a fishing agreement with Trinidad and Tobago.

“Several requests have been made to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago from the Government of Barbados in an attempt to resume discussions on this matter. The Barbados Government, has indicated to the Government of Trinidad in 2009 and 2010, that we are willing to have discussion on the matter of a Fishing Agreement between the two countries," McClean told Trakker News.

“The last occasion we made the request to discuss the issue, a general elections was pending in Trinidad. I think it is up to the new government there that to indicate that they are willing to talk,” says McClean.

During the past two weeks fishermen in Tobago have began to complain that Barbadian fishermen are fishing in their waters.

Several fishermen from the fishing villages of Castra and Parcaturier have stated that each time they set their rafts, Barbadian fishermen tie their boats to the rafts.

According to one fisherman”When ever we see the Bajans and confront them we are subjected to insults and abuse."
