Georgetown : Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad hosted the official launch of this year’s Bartica Regatta at his South Road Office.
He said that the Regatta, which has become a signature event for Region Seven, started out as a one-day event; however, this year it is expected to be an entire week of activities.
Minister Prashad pointed out that during the Easter season, much Guyanese living abroad return to Guyana, as such the Ministry has engaged officials from Delta Airlines to organize more flights.
“We expect a significant amount of tourists to be in Bartica over that weekend, which is a good thing for tourism in Guyana,” Minister Prashad said.
The Bartica Regatta Pageant, which has become a popular feature in this event, will see nine young women from Region Seven and its environs vying for the crown and Minister Prashad urged them to be good tourism ambassadors for Guyana.
This year, for the first time, Government has approved duty-free concessions for persons desirous of purchasing speed boats for the sole purpose of participating in boat racing competitions.
The Easter weekend will also see the Rupununi Rodeo as well as kite flying competitions around the country including No.63 Beach, Corentyne, Unity, Mahaica and the Kingston Seawall.
