Georgetown– Relatives of Shaunell Warrick were hopeful that she will survive a vicious beating that left her hospitalized for several weeks, but when they visited her yesterday, doctors gave them the sad news that she died just before noon. On new years day 2011 the nursery school teacher suffered a fractured skull after a severe beating to the head with a cutlass by her reputed husband Rudolph London. London was since charged with attempted murder and incarcerated. Now his charge sheet will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions to be changed to murder. The mother of two survived the injuries for several weeks clinging unto life with treatment to help her pull through. Relatives said she gave up the fight when she realized that she was unable to talk and move her body as a result of the injuries. They explained that she seemed worried and slipped into a deep depression.
At a time when Guyana promotes awareness of domestic violence and many policies to stop the scourge, something like this occurs. One activist said that for some people violence against women in just statistics since this is being ignored everyday, particularly in the rural communities. The reality he added is that women continue to suffer silently at the hands of abusive men, and that the society must continue to educate itself about this issue in an effort to stamp it out and stop the sufferings and deaths.
