Georgetown : Social activist Mark Benchop this afternoon stages a picket exercise in front of the building that houses TVG, Guyana Times Daily and Radio Guyana Inc. The media houses are owned and operated by Dr. Rajni Singh (Bobby) Ramroop.
Benchop protest action stemmed as a result of one person who is known to be a close associate of former President Bharrat Jagdeo while the town of Linden has not got the privilege for a privately owned television station. Benchop told TrakkerNews that the issuing of radio license was done based on favoritism.
Meanewhile Chairperson of Board of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA), Bibi Shaddick responded to an advertisement in the Kaieteur News, clarifying that there is no law in Guyana that prohibits a person from owning three media operations.
For several weeks, the Kaieteur News has been publishing an advertisement which states that the best friend of former president Bharrat Jagdeo is the only Guyanese who owns three media houses; insinuating that the owner of the Guyana Times/TVG, Dr. Bobby Ramroop acquired his licenses as a result of his affiliation with the former Head of State.
“I congratulate somebody who is enterprising enough to invest in this country and create jobs…are they saying the former president should not have a best friend or is it that a friend of the former president shouldn’t be in business?” Shaddick stated.
