Georgetown: The county of Berbice will be hosting its grand Mashramani Costume and Float parade on Sunday, March 1, with the region’s theme being “Celebrating Unity, Prosperity and Harmony in our land of Rich History and Cultural Diversity”.
The much anticipated costume and float parade will commence from Tacama Turn, New Amsterdam, then proceed into Vryheid Street, Strand South, and will culminate at Matthew Allen Road (Stelling Road), followed by a “Mash Wash-Down” party, afterwards.
At present, nine bands have registered to enter the parade, eight of which will be from Georgetown. Included are those from a number of ministries: Culture, Youth and Sport; Education; Health; Agriculture; and Amerindian Affairs; plus participation from the Progressive Youth Organisation; Guyana Youth and Student Movement; and Digicel.
The event is expected to kick off with a mega concert on February 28, compliments of Candy Shop Entertainment, in collaboration with Region Six Regional Democratic Council National Events Committee. The concert will feature performances from Jamaican artiste Tony Matterhorn, and Guyanese singers, Calvin Burnette and Bunty Singh. Previously, a calendar of activities was hosted in Berbice, to commemorate Guyana’s 45th Republic Anniversary. These included a Senior Citizens lunch, where over 60 elderly residents of Berbice benefitted, a mega Inter-agency domino competition, and a Spelling Bee competition, which targeted primary school students, who will be sitting the upcoming National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).
As customary, the flag raising ceremony and cultural show were held on February 22.
