Berbice sugar workers picketed Freedom House over heavy tax

New Amsterdam, Berbice : Earlier today employees of the Guyana Sugar Corporation ( GUYSUCO) staged a protest in front of the PPP/C's New Amsterdam headquarters.

The protest stemmed from the workers outrage over the tax deductions made on their recently received 3% increase in salary. The workers complained of having to pay as much as $12,000 in taxes, saying this made their salary increase seem non-existent. Some of the sugar workers also took the opportunity to show their support for the Alliance for Change, chanting "Vote for Change" and "Ramjattan for President". This outburst of support irked some other protesters who immediately started chanting "we putting back PPP". The protest, however, was short-lived because members of the 'B' Division Police showed up and took away most of the sugar workers, while a few managed to escape.

  1. A protest just a few days before the elections? is this a preview of what the election aftermath will be like? Makes you wonder. Guess I won’t be coming home for Xmas.
