Georgetown: President David Granger on Wednesday received Letters of Credence from Botswana and Zambia’s newly accredited non-resident High Commissioners to Guyana, Tebogo Teko Lily Motshome and Alfreda Chilekwa Kansembe Mwamba respectively.
The credentials were presented to the Head of State in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Guyana and the Republic of Zambia enjoyed excellent relations since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties back in 1971. These relations were cemented by the close friendship between the late Prime Minister Forbes Burnham and Zambia’s first President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.
According to President Granger, Guyana is moving towards the establishment of a ‘green state’. He added that this initiative will place emphasis on the protection of the country’s environment, biodiversity, the promotion of renewable energy and the adoption of practical measures to ensure climate adaptation.
Therefore, the head of state noted the high commissioner’s appointment will create the opportunity for both nations to exchange good practices and experiences in ‘green’ development.
He also noted that Guyana and Botswana also enjoyed excellent relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties, forty-four years ago. The two nations have worked closely with each other within the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group, the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.
The president reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to deepening engagements and cooperation with Botswana within these organizations.
“Our relationship is founded on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of international peace and security,” President Granger told the commissioners.
He assured that the Government of Guyana will support the commissioners in the discharge of their duties.
