Broadcasting Authority to grant more radio station licenses

StationGeorgetown: The Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) has announced that it has started processing applications for more radio licences with about 50 submissions to be dealt with, including new ones. The process will be conducted over a three-day period, Chairperson of the Board Ms. Bibi Shaddick said.

The Government has been severely criticised in recent days after it was revealed in parliament that former President Jagdeo doled out radio frequencies to some of his closest friends and associates just before leaving office. Radio Guyana which is owned by Jagdeo's best friend received 5 frequencies, The PPP's Mirror Newspaper was also granted 5 frequencies along with a new company that is being headed by the brother in law of Education Minister Priya Manickchand. That new company was also granted 5 frequencies. A number of other operators received one frequency each while NCN Radio received additional frequencies also.

Both the Guyana Press Association and the Guyana Media Proprietors Association have come out criticising the process saying it should have been done in a fair manner but instead looks as if the former President and the Government was trying to scoop up all the frequencies for some of their loyalists and friends.
