Georgetown: The much anticipated Competitiveness Manifesto outlining the top twenty barriers to the development of industry and commerce in Guyana was unveiled Tuesday by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI.)
The Manifesto outlines factors affecting competitiveness including political and economic stability, human resource development, transparency and accountability, strengthening of judicial mechanisms and factors of production and business financing.
GCCI’s President, Clinton Urling said “It becomes the responsibility of business, parliamentarians, the educational sector, all levels of government, and even every Guyanese citizen. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce has the strength, voice and willingness to bring all parties together to help Guyana develop its competitive edge as an emerging economic powerhouse.”
Urling said he was optimistic about local government elections being held very soon.
“In order to break through the barriers to higher growth levels and to meet the most urgent development challenges, the power of the private sector in Guyana needs to be unleashed so that the best practices of a well-coordinated knowledge-based, 21st century economy can be shared and implemented throughout every sector and aspect of the nation’s economy.”
The document includes calls for the urgent commencement of the Public Procurement Commission (PPC) and the inclusion of the Private Sector Concessions to the mandate of the PPC; ensuring political and economic stability; improving the tax system; implementing comprehensive security sector reform; establishing a development bank; resolving Guyana’s skills challenge; making Guyana a magnet for Foreign Direct Investment; building a globally competitive manufacturing sector; and accelerating the implementation of the national Competitive Strategy.
