A leading Barbadian businessman says Caribbean governments support for LIAT, is the main reason why the lifespan of new airlines in the region are shortlived.
Bernie Weatherhead, whose group of companies includes a travel agency and several hotels in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, was speaking to Caribbean Trakker on Redjet's inability to start flights from Barbados to Trinidad and Jamaica.
"It seem to me that whenever Barbados tries to start an airline, it comes under pressure from other islands in the Caribbean. Many of these services do not last because of some regional government's absolute support for LIAT and Trinidad 's total support for Caribbean Airlines", says Weatherhead.
"The people of the Caribbean have been taxed by their governments for the operations of LIAT, the failures of airline are being paid for by the people of the region', he added.
Weatherhead stated that he was 100 percent supportive of Redjet or any other carrier desirous of operating in the region.
