Businessman urged Government to fast track renewable energy legislation

Bridgetown.

Chairman of Williams Industry Ralph "Bizzy" Williams is urging the Government to speed up its promised legislation to govern renewable energy reforms.

Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in his 2011 Budget said the Govenment and the Inter American Development Bank had negotiate a second energy policy based loan of $US75 million to exceute the preparation of renewable and efficiency policies through the necessary legislation. The aim is to cut oil imports by 25 percent over 20 years.

The veteran businessman is interested in a pilot renewable energy rider, a programme that would allow Barbados Light & Power customers to install photovoltaic systems in their homes or businesses and sell power to the national grid.

These energy saving devices can convert sunlight into electricity that can be used to rum household appliances and lighting.

According to Williams, Parliament would need to pass laws to facilitate the process promised by Sinckler in last year's Budget.

"The bottom line right now is that we have no regulations in Barbados to govern how much a person is going to be paid for electricity generated by photovolaic or any alternate source of energy. I have been told by several Government Ministers that the legislation is about to be passed, I am hoping that it will be passed soon", Williams told Trakker News.

Williams said he wanted to set up a large photovotaic generating station in a greenfield site but could not do so because he cannot get the finance for the project  without the regulations being in place.
