Georgetown: Some relatives and organisations are calling on the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the operations at military base Camp Ayangana. These concerns follow the recent torture allegations by a private Dane Wilson who was recently honourably discharged from the army. It is believed that the army has certain protocols that prevents the institution from an independent investigation unless it is made up of military panel consisting of high ranking personnel. This relatives say this will never work since an investigation by the army can never be transparent, particularly if the members are directly involved in sanctioning are being part of the alleged activities. The allegations surfaced after the private's mother took her concerns to the press about the alleged torture of her son. The allegations stemmed from beatings, stripped naked, incarserated in a water-soaked cell among other inhumane actions. The Guyana Defence Force has since denied the allegations and recommended a medical check-up for the private at a private medical institution. Reports are that 14 other soldiers like him wants to leave because of the treatment. However, in some circles, a life in the army is ordained by rigorous and tough treatment. Training has to be harsh as soldiers are prepared to defend their country
