This year's sugar harvest has been delayed for the a week. Originally the reaping of the canes was stated to begin on the 18th of this month but sugar officals told Trakker News it was delayed because of the general elections on February 21st.
The officials said they did not wish to start and stop the crop hence the decision to push back the date.
According to the General Manager of the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) Leslie Parris, a meeting will be held with independent growers today to discuss serval issues.
He noted that the BAMC controls 40 percent of the land under sugar production.Parris said the sugar crop is expected to produce just over 18 thousand tonnes of sugar and should last about ten weeks.

Parris is hoping for good weather during the sugar harvest which will be down on last year's production of just over 24 thousand tonnes of sugar.
The sugar crop is expected to start on Monday March 4th.
