Georgetown: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) commenced its Energy Week of activities, (November 7-14) with a Kilo Walk, from the CARICOM Secretariat west along the Railway Embankment, to north on Conversation Tree, to east on Rupert Craig Highway, then onto the University of Guyana Road and back to the Secretariat.
Among participants at the event Saturday were Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson and Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma.
CARICOM Energy Week (CEW) is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Empowering Our Sustainable Development.’ It was established in 2011 as an annual event, based on a mandate from CARICOM Energy Ministers, to provide a platform for increased awareness on energy matters.
Minister Patterson, who also has the responsibility for Energy in Guyana, congratulated CARICOM on organising such an important activity. He noted that renewable energy is one of the things his Ministry will be pushing vigorously.
Meanwhile, Sharma stressed on the importance of all Guyanese getting onboard and doing their bit to save Guyana. He urged CARICOM to organise more such activities in order to educate persons on the importance and benefits of saving energy.
The activities and events planned during the week will provide an opportunity to raise awareness in relation to energy matters in CARICOM Member States, whilst simultaneously addressing, in a deliberate way, some of the critical energy issues that continue to limit sustainable energy use.
