A FORMER top crime fighter has been gunned down in what appears to be a hit. Police investigators are stilled trying to determine the exact motive behind the murder of retired Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Cecil Carrington. He was shot twice at Carries on the Bay- a guest house he owned in Manzanilla. Emergency Health Service technicians found his body at the front desk around 12.30 a.m. shortly after nearby residents had reported hearing gunshots.

Georgetown –  The Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally, has challenged Senior Managers of GECOM Secretariat, and the Registration Officers attached to the 23 nationwide Registration Offices, to demonstrate unswerving efficiency with respect to the conduct of General and Regional Elections later this year.  This challenge was made during opening remarks which Dr. Surujbally gave at a one-day Meeting of the Senior Managers of the GECOM Secretariat and the Registration Officers.

Eve Leary, Georgetown – Despite the recent police interventions, and results seen in the reduction of crimes, there seems to be a persistent armed gang, which continue to attack and shoot citizens.TrakkerNews raised this concern with the police commissioner and asked him what the authorities are doing to stem these attacks. In response Henry Greene said;"We are as concerned as you about the persons who are robbed and shot, but as you would know a lot of this has to do with the access to guns".

 Georgetown – In response to statements made in The Kaieteur News Saturday 15th January 2011 and The Stabroek News Monday the 17th January 2011 by Mr. Chetram Singh, President of the Guyana Cricket Board, the Registrar of Friendly Societies is duty bound to conduct or caused to be audited any society registered under the Friendly Societies Act Chapter 36:04 under the Laws of Guyana. This is according to the Ministry of Labour.

 Georgetown – Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh in this year’s Budget estimates said public assistance is currently paid at a rate $4,900 per month to approximately 9,000 beneficiaries . Budget 2011 provides to be paid with effect from 1st February 2011, at a rate of $5,500 per month.

Old age pension will increase from $6,600 to $7,500 per month. Some 42,000 persons will benefit from this 14% increase.
 

Georgetown- Relatives of the twin brothers who drowned at  Mayaro Beach Trinidad are trying to cope with the sudden loss of their loved one. The family who resides at Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara, where the boys hailed from, is still shock. One aunt told TrakkerNews that the boys grew up very close within the family and were promising youngsters with good upbringing. After moving to Trinidad a few years ago with their mother, the aunt said that they would often visit and the family kept in close touch.
