Veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul defied the Australian bowler for six hours and 26 minutes to make an unbeaten 103, his 25 test century, on the second day of the first Test against Australia at Kensington Oval.
Chanderpaul was 8 not out when rain ended play prematurely yesterday evening, his overnight partner Darren Bravo was caught by Michael Hussy at gully for 51 with the score on 258.
The West Indies for a brief period after lunch struggle to 316 for 6 wickets, captain Darren Sammy turned the tide with a blistering 41 of 36 balls. He was dazed by a bouncer from Shane Watson which thundered into his head but the West Indies captain responded by hitting the all-rounder back into the stands for 6.
After Sammy was out the rest of the West Indies were happy to support Chanderpaul in his quest for a hundred,he was 95 when the ninth wicket fell but Devendra Bishoo aided by some innocous bowling shephered him to the milestone.
Brian Lara ( 34) and Sir Garry Sobers (26) are the West Indian with more test centuries than Chanderpaul.
The West Indies declared midway through the final session at 449 for 9, Ryan Harris was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 2 wickets for 83 runs.
Australia were 44 for no wicket at the end of day's play.
