Cheaper drugs for luekemia patients

Bridgetown.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has signed a three year contract with the drug manufacturer Novartis and its distributor in Barbados Collins Limited to purchase the drug Gilvec at a discounted price.

Gilvec is used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia patients.Chieh Executive Officer of the QEH Dr Dexter James, told Trakker News the hospital pays $US278,000 for a one month cycle of the drug.

Currently there are 12 patients that require the medication.
