Chemical fire averted

A chemical fire was averted at the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant in Lakes Folly, St Michael  in Lakes Folly, Bridgetown yesterday afternoon.

The fire which started in the mid afternoon  broke out in a storage room said to contain chlorine which, if ignited, would have resulted in very dangerous and potentially deadly smoke being released into a populated area was  quickly brought under control by the Barbados Fire Service.

Evacuations were conducted by the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Defence Force with support from roving response.

Chief Fire Officer, Wilfred Marshall told the media his officers were concerned about the presence of chlorine in the building and a decision was made to evacuate the area as a precaution.

Members of the Defence Force equipped with respirators went door to door assisting residents in leaving the area.

. Marshall said there were some residents who refused to leave their homes.
