Chief Elections Officer suffers heart attack

Georgetown: With the recent stressors related to upcoming General Elections, Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield has reportedly suffered a heart attack.

He is currently a patient of the Caribbean Heart Institute. He has been undergoing a number of medical tests and that doctors believe are related to a heart related stressors.

Lowenfield reportedly visited the Georgetown hospital Tuesday  before he was transferred to the Caribbean Heart Institute.

Reports indicate that he will remain hospitalised for another two days for observation purposes.

Lowenfield, who is known to suffer from hypertension, had been advised by Doctors recently to slow down the pace of his work and get more rest.

President David Granger has told the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to begin preparations for the holding of general elections and that government would find the money to run off the polls.

In response to GECOM Chairman, James Patterson’s letter about the recent decisions by the seven-member elections body, the President said, “the government of Guyana is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the Commission is provided with the financial resources and have sufficient time to conduct credible elections”.

Disclosure of the President’s correspondence to the GECOM Chairman came hours after Business Minister, Dominic Gaskin hinted at an oil and gas forum in Houston, Texas, that elections are likely to be held later this year.
