China gives Caricom US$1 billion loan

Port-of-Spain: The government of China has given Trinidad and Tobago a grant of TT$40 million for development projects following bilateral talks between China's vice-premier Wang Qishan and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The prime minister made the announcement after they both signed a partnership agreement. The grant will be used on any programme that is agreed upon by the two sides and will require the government to use Chinese labourers.

Earlier as Qishan addressed the launch of the Third China/Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, the vice-premier announced that China would be giving a US$1 billion dollar loan to Caricom.

It was just part of a six point package he announced for the region which will also include a US$1 million grant to Caricom.

China would also be making dozens of scholarships available to the Caribbean and will also seek to enhance trade, tourism and agricultural ties between China and the Caribbean.

There's also help coming with regards to warning systems for natural disasters.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar welcomed the new intitiativeson the grounds that the Caribbean remains vulnerable to the international economy. She says the government will also be looking at ways to strengthen ties with China including opening an embassy in the asian country.
