Georgetown: A Chinese national was fined for entering Guyana illegally after he overstayed her time. Sue Jeng, 27 who entered Guyana by way of back plead pleaded guilty to the charge.
Presiding over the case today was Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court. Particulars of the charge stated that on February 6 , at Springlands, Corentyne, he entered Guyana by sea and failed to present himself to an immigration officer.
“What you did was wrong and your actions are not tolerated by the law. You are hereby fined $70,000 or 6 months imprisonment. Do not do something like this again,” the Magistrate stated
According to the Prosecutor, the defendant who is the owner of a Republic of China passport is a regular visitor to Guyana. However, he did not have a valid work permit from the Ministry of Labour. On May 13, the defendant was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and when he presented his passport, an immigration officer noticed that there was no entry stamp showing his return to Guyana from Suriname. He was then questioned and related to the officials that he came to Guyana via back track from Suriname. He was consequently arrested and charged.
Attorney at law Paul Fung-A-Fat stood in Jeng’s defense said his client has been living in Guyana for the past 12 years at 413 Enterprise, East Coast Demerara and operates a Chinese restaurant. In addition, his client is currently applying for his citizenship. He begged the court for mercy.
