Minister of Commerce Senator Haynesley Benn has issued a warning to civil servants who leak private documents into the public domain.
Benn who lead off the debate in the Senate yesterday on the Prevention of Corruption Bill 2012 noted that freedom of information will come under the Act and there will no longer be a need to hide in order to procure documents, or use information that fell off the proverbial truck.
"When we display these documents we bring the integrity of public servants into question, because we know after a short period of time where they came from. We get a disclosure of the sources where this information comes from. I am warning public servants to be careful how you give out information that is supposed to be either private and confidential discussed at Cabinet or not yet debated in either Houses", Benn said.
He added that freedom of information will enhance good government through knowledge, transparency and accountability.
