CJ (ag) sworn in as JSC member

DSC_0974Georgetown: Chief Justice (ag) Yonette Cummings-Edwards was Wednesday sworn in as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The simple ceremony took place at the Ministry of the Presidency, where Justice Cummings-Edwards took the oath before President David Granger. In attendance was Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams, Chancellor (ag) Carl Singh, Retired Justice Prem Persaud, officials and special invitees.

Madam Justice Cummings-Edwards began her law career in 1988. An Appeal Court judge for many years, Madam Justice Cummings-Edwards is the second woman to be appointed to the position of Chief Justice. Madam Justice Desiree Bernard was Guyana's first female Chief Justice.

The JSC is responsible for making appointments across the judiciary and is responsible for disciplining judges and magistrates. The Chancellor of the Judiciary acts as Chairman of the Commission.

President David Granger said the appointment is significant since Government has taken measures to strengthen the autonomy of the judicial system in Guyana.

The Head of State assured the chancellor that the Government will work towards preserving the integrity of the JSC and the confidence and competence of members of the judiciary.

“I’m confident in your (Justice Cummings-Edwards) ability of discharge your functions without fear of favor, affection of ill will,” the President remarked.
