Georgetown : The Ministers of Public Infrastructure David Patterson and Annette Ferguson today constituted the new board of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Kingston.
Minister Patterson noted that last year the airport saw an increase in flights and passengers, and expects the numbers to increase as a result of the 50th anniversary celebrations in May.
He said that CJIA has very little air traffic traversing South America when compared to North America, and that this situation must change. "As the only English – speaking country, we have the lowest connectivity with our southern areas,” the Minister said. He added “that is an active market that we need to tap into." Minister Patterson urged board members to foster economic development through cost- efficient methods.
In addition, Minister Patterson said that he is optimistic that the airport will achieve its mandate through accountability and transparency.
He urged the members of the board to not leave employees behind, because without employees on the ground, the work of the airport cannot be done. He further pointed out that the employees are just as important as passengers who board flights.
Chairman of the board, Stephen Fraser expressed gratitude to the ministry for having placed its trust in him. He pointed out that he is comfortable with his team and excited about the new runway that is currently under construction.
