Port of Spain: Government is pursuing the idea of giving a grant to inmates upon their release from prison. And the head of Vision on Mission Wayne Chance is volunteering his services.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had said that government was working on a formula to give a $5,000 grant to former inmates to help them with their rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
Speaking at the Senate yesterday, Minister of National Security John Sandy said the programme was not provided for in the budget. He said, however, it can be reviewed. He also said a committee comprising number of ex-inmates, NGOs and other stakeholders is to be set up to look at implementing the initiative.
Today Mr Chance says he is hoping that the correct persons would be chosen to sit on the committee.
