Georgetown : The Ministry of Home Affairs today handed over land and water transport to the value of over $17M to Community Policing Groups (CPGs) in the various police divisions across the country to strengthen their operational capabilities.
The vehicles include: two four wheel pickups which were given to Upper and Lower Corentyne, Region Six, two fibre glass boats for Bartica and Kwakwani, three three-wheelers for Parfait Harmonie, Lodge, Georgetown, and East Coast Demerara and one ATV.
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee said that the provision of these vehicles is another demonstration of the Government of Guyana’s commitment to equip CPGs with the requisite tools and equipment to fulfill their responsibilities. Members were also reminded to use the vehicles strictly for the purposes for which they were given.
CPGs have been playing a key and successful supporting role to the Guyana Police Force in the fight to reduce crimes in Guyana, particularly at the community level and the Government encourages the formation of such bodies throughout the country. This was confirmed by no less a person than President Donald Ramotar himself.
Minister Rohee issued a call for more citizens to join the community policing system across the country.
“There is nothing that can replace community policing, many countries would like to have what we have here in Guyana…we are the envy of the Caribbean in so far as community policing is concerned, what we need to do is to grow from strength to strength and build the organisation,” Minister Rohee stated.
