The company manufacturing the tablets, Surtab, was founded in 2013 by Maarten Boute , who is the CEO of Digicel Haiti, and by businessman Richard Coles. The company was backed, at start, with $450,000 in private capital and also received $200,000 in funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Surtab’s factory is located in Port-au-Prince and employs over 60 employees with 90% of them women. According to the company’s website, surtab is a contraction of the French adjective sur and the English noun tablet.
There are three models and these include the high-end HD 3G model , the 3G model and the low end WiFi model.
