Confiscate ill gotten gains say Acting Chief Justice

Bridgetown.

Drug trafficking is a major deterrent to the orderly and productive development of the Caribbean economies, therefore an informed and proactive judiciary  has an siganificant role to play in minimising the illegal activity.

Acting Chief Justice Peter Williams told Magistrates attending a Forfeiture, Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Workshop which began in the Supreme Court Complex yesterday.

"It follows that it is not enough to punish the offenders, it is vital to also deprive them, thier families and friends of the financial rewards of their criminal activity. The judicial officer is therefore required to be resolute in enforcing the law, in the face of societal pressures in some Caribbean countries of increasing levels of production and distribution of narcotic substances", Williams said.

Twenty Magistrates from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean are attending the one week workshop.
