Confiscate property of drug lords says Attorney General

Bridgetown.

Attorney General of Barbados Adriel Brathwaite says Government should seek to acquire the property of drug lords by civil rather than criminal action.

Speaking during the signing of an agreement at his office with United States Ambassador Larry Palmer for allocation of new funding of US$458,000 under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, Brathwaite said he favoured  civil foretiture of acquired property rather than the criminal route.

"I do not believe that anyone should be allowed to live in this country and display their ill gotten gains without us using whatever apparatus we have at our disposal within our laws, to ensure that it does not happen, because it send the wrong signal to the rest of the community", Brathwaite said.

Brathwaite explained even though there were existing procedures in place for the criminal forfeiture of assets, civil forfeiture is the method he preferred.
