Confusion over effectiveness of police sickout action

Port-of-Spain: While the Ministry of National Security has reported an 80 percent turnout by police officers during yesterday's day of rest and reflection, police sources in various divisions say there were unusual pockets of crime.

Police sources in Northern, North Eastern, Eastern and Southern Divisions say that while they were able to manage the situation criminals took advantage of the fact that some stations were depleted and staff had to be moved from one area to augment other areas.

Police officials tell us the matter is being investigated by seniors to determine the extent of the fallout and to ensure there is no repeat of the situation. Meantime, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber  of Industry and Commerce is commending the nations police officers for exercising restraint and turning up for work yesterday.

In a relase the Chamber said the position adopted by the majority of police officers was responsible and shows committment given the present industrial relation climate.
