Consultation on Financial Investigation Units starts

Bridgetown.

A  two day consultation Financial Investigation Units in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean began at the Acca Beach Hotel yesterday.

In his opening address Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, said small countries like those in the Caribbean have to work hard to ensure their borders are protected against terrorist financing and money laundering.

Brathwaite said unlike larger counties, the disadvantage of being small was that a minor infraction could be magnified in the international arena and destroy a country's reputation.

"If we accept the challenge that it is our responsibility our people's way of life will continue, then the fact that playing field is not level should be a deterrent", Brathwaite said.

He stated the issues seems to change  each year and the criminals always found new ways to get around the  law and beat the system.

The consultation is being facilitated by the British High Commission, High Commissioner  Paul Brummell, said thier association was a signal of the importance they placed on a regional approach to tackling proceeds of  crime and the crimminal economy as a deterrent to those tempted by a life of crime.
