Georgetown : The National Assembly today passed into Law the Consumers’ Affairs Bill (No. 7) of 2011, after it was sent to a Special Select Committee and was considered clause by clause and unanimously agreed that there should be no amendments.
Presented to the House by Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, the Bill seeks to promote and protect consumers’ interest in relation to the supply of goods and services and, related purposes.
People’s National Congress Reform Member of Parliament Mervyn Williams, while giving support to the Bill expressed concern with regards to the quality of goods entering the country and questioned the application of compliance with standards.
Minister Prashad welcomed the comments of the Opposition Member, noting that the issue of price fluctuations for public transportation and the hire purchase legislation will be addressed.
The Minister noted that the issue of public transport, which he has been dealing with since at the level of the Chamber of Commerce and Private Sector Commission, will also be a matter of priority, to be addressed by the National Assembly.
