East Coast- There is a deep concern among NDC officials and resident in the immediate area affected by yesterday's gas leak of the Guyana Water Inc. facility at Better Hope on the eastern corridors. There is call for a containment facility where these cylinders are stored in the event of a chemical leak. Yesterday situation sent many scouring for air, some ended up at the seawalls to avoid the harmful chemicals. A number of persons were hospitalised. Initial reports suggested that one of the gas cylinder may have become defective.  A Hazmat Team located the leaking cylinder and took necessary action to contain the leak including burying the cylinder.

GWI has launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the leak. This will be headed by Occupational Health and Safety Officer, GWI, Christopher Cathro. GWI expresses gratitude to members of the Guyana Fire Service and Hazmat Teams for their assistance. The company apologizes to all residents of Better Hope and nearby environs and wishes to assure that all action will be taken to avoid this in the future.
