Essequibo : Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Alli Baksh has reported that the breached sea defence at Leguan in the Essequibo River, Region Three which affected residents and farming areas has been sealed.
“The water receded tremendously…we were able to mobilise machinery and manual labour to do some work to the area…the breach was completely sealed with over $300M worth of work in drainage has been completed so far…40,000 rods of desilting was also done to the area,” Minister Baksh said.
Excessive high tides caused the breach on Good Friday.
Meanwhile, Chief Sea and River Defence Office, Ministry of Public Works, Geoffrey Vaughn said that while temporary works were done to bring some form of relief to residents of the area, a contract for permanent sea defence works is to be awarded.
“The green light has been given since September last for a contract to be awarded to reconstruct the sea defence structure in Leguan…the Public Works Ministry has advertised the contract and has gotten some responses…we are currently awaiting for a contractor to be awarded after which permanent works will be executed,” Vaughn said.
He added that 720 metres of sea defence structure will be completed using the rip- rap method.
