Controversy brews over nine suspended health workers

San Fernando: A major controversy is developing in the health sector over the suspension of nine medical workers at the San Fernando General Hospital in south Trinidad, following the death of a 29-year-old woman during childbirth two Fridays ago.

The South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) by which the hospital is governed, is investigating why a directive it gave to its Chief Executive Officer Paula Chester-Cumberbatch to suspend five doctors and four nurses is yet to be carried out.

The suspension letters were to have been issued on Monday but two days later nothing has happened.

Chairman of the SWRHA, Doctor Lackram Bodoe says the board is in the process of determining why its directive has not been carried out.

The  29-year-old mother of three, Crystal Boodoo Ramsoomair bled to death following a C-section and hysterectomy at the hospital.

A three-member panel headed by Dr Bodoe has been appointed to investigate the circumstances leading to Ramsoomair's death and whether there was culpability on the part of the medical team which has been suspended.
