Coral reefs in danger

Bridgetown.

Marine Biologist Angelique Brathwaite has warned that Barbados has to act now to save its coral reefs.

According to Brathwaite who is attach to the Coast Zone Management Unit,  the situation regarding the country's coral reefs is dire and all sectors needs to come together to save them.

She told Trakker News most of the ecosystem services provided by the reefs such as protection and reef fish habitat could be lost unless something is done.

Brathwaite said land based sources of marine pollution such as general runoff, sewage, gray water, pesticides and fertiliser, coupled with physical damage from boats, divers  and unsustainable fishing practices , have led to approximately half the coral on the bank reefs being lost in just a decade.
