Port of Spain; A shocking seen as approxiametly 150 dead and sick corbeaux were found lying at the Heliport in Chaguaramas. The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) believes it may have been a result of them feeding off the carcass of an animal that might have been poisoned.
Chief Executive Officer of the EMA Joth Singh, said initially they suspected it was a case of avian flu, but preliminary test had shown avian flu had not killed the birds. They also have not found any chemical spills, he said.
In a media release, Peter Campbell, corporate communication and public relations officer at the Chaguaramas Development Authority, said the authority was investigating the discovery along the Western end of the heliport.
Following the sightings the Poultry Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health of Food Production, the Veterinary Public Health Unit of the Ministry of Health, Environmental Management Authority and the Forestry Division were all alerted and samples of the dead birds were taken for testing.
Major Al Alexander, Public Affairs Officer of the T&T Defense Force said "We are collecting them and have them bagged and insulated in large metal bins. We had EMA AND PSU and they did testing. They took samples of the birds to Mt Hope for testing." He said Fire Services will be on stand by to bleach, wash and hose down the area.
