Georgetown: Amid swirling allegations of corruption at the Guyana Fire Service, the Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo was sent on leave pre-retirement leave on Thursday.
He reaches the age of retirement in June, 2022 after an audit report into the Fire Service Headquarters also unearthed a number of concerning financial issues.
The Fire Chief earlier this week had met with Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn and Permanent Secretary Mae Toussaint Jr. Thomas over the financial issues highlighted in an audit report.
In October, 2021, the Fire Chief was also sent on leave days after a disastrous fire ravaged the Brickdam Police station and destroyed over 80 per cent of the buildings in the compound.
Edoo according to documents since becoming Fire Chief acting, changed several systems and procedures at the Fire Service, some of which have been in place for decades and were meant to ensure accountability for the Fire Department’s monies.
Edoo reportedly instructed that persons who are paying for safety certificates and petroleum licenses make payments directly to his office.
