Cost of operations at Transport Board continues to rise

Bridgetown.

The cost of operations at the state run Transport Board continues to rise dispite efforts to reduce its consumption of fuel.

Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce, made this comment  in Parliament yesterday, after piloting a resolution for the Government to borrow $32 million from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) to help in the Board's financing until next year.

Boyce said the Transport Board had improved in many areas, such as saving 65000 litres of fuel per month but the global crisis led to a massive increase in fuel in fuel cost .

"The board cannot afford to spend money outside the the essential areas. We are constantly looking at ways to reduce our operating cost", Boyce told Parliament.

He added there are services which the Board provides, such as charters which can be profitable.

Boyce said the NIS loan was being used to make sure the Board's liabilities were covered for equipment and maintenance of its 297 bus fleet and also to pay back other creditors.
