Port-of-Spain: Port-of-spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing says he believes a call by councillors of the Port-of-Spain City Corporation for him to step down as mayor, is a calculated attack against him but he says he is not willing to respond at this time to their claims.
Eleven members of the corporation have written to the mayor calling on him to step down because of their disapproval of his leadership of the corporation.
They have asked for an urgent meeting with him to discuss their concerns.
Mayor Lee Sing, who is also the subject of controversy over a leaked letter complaining of circumstances within the party, says he is at this time gathering his thoughts on all that has transpired and will host a news conference soon to give his side of the story.
He said he did not want to comment further until such time.
Deputy Mayor Keron Valentine confirmed the letter follows months of expression of concerns about the mayor, making pronouncements without discussions or decisions by the Council.
Valentine claims that during a meeting called by the mayor on Tuesday which started half an hour, the mayor stated his intention to resign both as mayor and as a member of the People's National Movement.
He says this was agreed to by members, but that the mayor later announced that he would not be stepping down and that the members would have to proceed by a vote of no confidence.
He claims that a vote was taken and a unanimous decision reached, following which the letter was submitted.
According to the Municipality Act of 1990, the mayor has seven days to reply.
