Coup leader fails to appear before Commission of Inquiry

Port-of-Spain: The leader of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen and the man who led the insurrection against the Government in 1990, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, has indicated to the Commission of Inquiry into the 1990 Coup, that he cannot at this time appear as a witness in the ongoing inquiry.

Bakr was listed to appear before the inquiry today and tomorrow, however his attorney, Naveen Maraj told the Commission that Bakr has been legally advised not to appear at the Commission at this time based on  concerns of self-incrimination, credibility and pre-trial publicity, as the Imam is set to appear in another matter in the High Court on July 5th.

That matter relates to a controversial Eid-ul-Fitr sermon delivered in 2005 for which the Imam was charged with sedition, terrorism and attempting to incite.

His attorney told the Commission that the Imam is willing to appear but in due course.

In light of the position put forward by the Jamaat leader's attorney, the lawyers for the Commission agreed that the concerns were legitimate and agreed to await the determination of the other High Court matters.
