Georgetown: Several persons have been arrested after a West Coast Demerara (WCD) fisherman was found dead on Monday in the Berbice River.
The dead man has been identified as 49-year-old Shahabudeen Haniff of Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD.
According to initial Police investigations, the fisherman’s body was found in the net of a fishing vessel that was working in the vicinity of the Berbice River.
Further reports revealed that the Haniff was a member of the crew and they set sail on a fishing boat that left a wharf at New Hope, East Bank Demerara on December 30, 2015. They were heading to the Berbice River area.
Haniff reportedly went missing from the boat and his body was later found by another fishing vessel in the Berbice River. This newspaper was made to understand that his crew members were arrested.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that four crew members, including the Captain of the vessel, were taken into custody and are assisting with the investigation.
While he did not want to divulge much information about the investigation, the Crime Chief noted that they are awaiting the post-mortem examination to determine how to proceed with the matter. The examination is expected to be conducted today.
