Georgetown: The First Crime Mapping two-day training workshop at the Police Training Centre concluded on Friday under the Ministry of Public Security (MOPS) Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP).
The workshop is focused on equipping practitioners with the knowledge of spatial analysis, and an introduction to Geographic Information System (GIS).
Ms. Valarie Grant a leading consultant of GIS in the Region and the facilitator of the training, explained in her remarks that participants will also gain knowledge of the GIS software, data collection, input and editing, quality assurance and Quality control, and presenting data using web maps or mobile devices.
Twenty (20) practitioners from the Crime & Social Observatory Unit, the Strategic Planning and Information Technology Units of the Guyana Police Force, Information Technology Unit of Guyana Prison Service, and the Crime Observatory Department of the Minister of Public Security participated in the training and is expected to understand how to utilise geospatial technology and visual analytics for crime reporting, mapping, and analysis at the end of the workshop.
Project Manager of Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP) Dr. Clement Henry addressing the trainees stated that the long term goal of the training is to ensure that in every Police sub- division there is at least one crime analyst that has the skill to do spatial analysis.
Moreover, IDB representative Dr Jason Wilks, in his remarks added that due to the seriousness of the Government of Guyana to support the use of information technology for citizen security, IDB along with other donors such as UNDP CariSECURE, the British and others, continue to support the Government in this crime fighting initiative.
