Guyana:- Construction of the spanking new, $16M Fire Station at Diamond, East Bank Demerara is at a virtual standstill and is also now ‘woefully behind schedule.’
The facility meant to service tens of thousands in the neighboring Grove, Friendship and Herstelling communities and others along EBD, was supposed to have been completed in April.
Caribbean Trakker visited the construction site earlier today where a lone mason was still laying concrete blocks for some interior walls.
Works commenced on the project in December last.
The contractor did promise that the project will be completed before the April deadline.
The project is being undertaken by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Engineer’s Estimate for the project had placed the cost at $19M.
G&S Construction, owned by Sookdeo, secured the contract with his $16M bid.
The 2011 Budgetary Estimates for the Ministry of Home Affairs, had allocated some $55M as part of a $65M programme, to complete a fire station at Mahaica, the construction of the one at Diamond and a training school at Leonora.
