Cuban President Raul Castro arrives for Cuba-Caricom Summit

Port-of-Spain: Cuban President Raul Castro has told Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar that he is honoured that this country is among the few that recognises Cuba.

He spoke to the prime minister at the Diplomatic Centre this afternoon, soon after touching down at the Piarc International Airport for a Cuba-Caricom Summit to begin tomorrow.

Speaking through an interpreter President Castro told the prime minister that he feels very honoured and appreciated to be here saying that Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana are among the three regional countries he greatly respects for not isolating Cuba.

He told the prime minister that before the independence of English-speaking Caribbean nations, only Mexico, Panama, Peru and Chile had any relations with Cuba and he added that the position taken by Trinidad and Tobago to host the the Cuba-Caricom Summit is very much appreciated and will be celebrated when the summit opens.

He said he hopes to return to this country again in the near future.

Earlier President Castro went to Memorial Square in Port-of-Spain where he lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in honour of all who served and in memory of those who fell during the first and second world wars.

President George Maxwell Richards accompanied President Castro.

Before President Castro arrived his security detail were spreading themselves across the square with noticable briefcases in their hands and one of them scanned the wreath  to detect radioctivity.

There have been several attempts on the life of Raul Castro's brother and predecessor Fidel Castro.

The summit begins Thursday at the National Academy for the Performing Arts.
